About
Alain Resnais's short documentary contrasts the abandoned Auschwitz and Majdanek camps with past images while describing Nazi ideology and camp life.
Night and Fog is a French documentary short directed by Alain Resnais, made ten years after the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps. It visits the abandoned grounds of Auschwitz and Majdanek in occupied Poland, alternating between historical black-and-white footage and newly shot colour images. The narrator, Michel Bouquet, describes the rise of Nazi ideology and the lives of prisoners in the camps. The title comes from the Nazi Nacht und Nebel programme of abductions and disappearances. Jean Cayrol, a survivor of Mauthausen-Gusen, worked on the script, and Hanns Eisler composed the music. Archive footage includes Reinhard Heydrich, Heinrich Himmler, Adolf Hitler and Julius Streicher.
