About

An essay film made from archival footage that sets Communist propaganda against accounts of the Soviet labour camps, including voices of Gorky and Solzhenitsyn.

Lina Gorbaneva's documentary My Own Personal Gulag is an essay film about the contrast between the Communist idea of reeducation and the reality of the Soviet labour camps. It works with archival material: scenes from films by Dziga Vertov, Sergei Eisenstein, Vsevolod Pudovkin and Oleksandr Dovzhenko are mixed with documentary images, animation and recovered recordings of the White Sea Canal construction. Written fragments give space to opposing views, including Maxim Gorky, who defended the Stalin regime and called the Gulag a historical experiment, and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, who described the camps' horrors in The Gulag Archipelago. The film examines the divide between propaganda and reality.
