About
A documentary on Germany's refusal to pay reparations for genocide in Namibia and the Living Museums where Herero-speaking people reenact their ancestors' culture.
Jonas Spriestersbach's documentary Meanwhile in Namibia looks at postcolonial structures in Namibia, a former German colony. Between 1904 and 1908 the German Reich committed genocide against the Herero and Nama. The German federal government refuses to recognise it in legal terms and to pay reparations. Instead, it relies on development cooperation projects. The film focuses on the so-called Living Museums. In a show village initiated by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, Herero-speaking people are asked to recreate for tourists the culture and way of life of their ancestors, which the genocide largely erased. By emphasising the supposed otherness of those taking part, the project recalls the historical Völkerschauen.
