About
A young Polish filmmaker investigates Mateusz Birkut, a bricklayer made a 1950s propaganda hero who later fell out of favour and disappeared.
Agnieszka (Krystyna Janda), a young Polish filmmaker, is making her diploma film about Mateusz Birkut (Jerzy Radziwiłowicz), a bricklayer who was turned into a propaganda hero in 1950s Nowa Huta, the new socialist city near Kraków. Two decades later, Birkut has fallen out of favour with the Party and his whereabouts seem to have been lost.
Agnieszka finds little in archives and museum collections beyond official propaganda. She turns to successful director Jerzy Burski (Tadeusz Łomnicki), who recounts the making of his unfinished film Building Our Happiness. His account brings out how Birkut came to be chosen as an example of the progress and efficiency of the new industrial city.
