Life Itself is a documentary by Steve James about the Chicago film critic Roger Ebert. It draws on Ebert's memoir of the same name and follows his path from the school paper to his years as a critic at the Chicago Sun-Times. Ebert appears in the film himself, with his wife Chaz Ebert at his side; Stephen Stanton provides his voice. The filmmakers Ramin Bahrani and Ava DuVernay, the critic Richard Corliss, the television producer Nancy De Los Santos and Ebert's friend Bruce Elliot also appear.
A large part of the film is given to the television programmes in which Ebert debated current films with his colleague Gene Siskel between 1975 and 1999; the two critics often held opposing views.
