About
Diana Ross plays Billie Holiday in a biographical drama about the singer's early life, first club bookings and relationship with Louis McKay.
In 1928 Baltimore, Eleanora Fagan, later known as Billie Holiday, is a 15-year-old housekeeper in a brothel. After fleeing to her mother, she takes a cleaning job at another brothel in Harlem, then tires of scrubbing floors and tries to become a showgirl. A nightclub audition goes unsuccessfully until "Piano Man" accompanies her; club owner Jerry then books her as a singer. Her debut falters until Louis McKay arrives and leaves a twenty-dollar tip, and soon she begins a relationship with him. Diana Ross plays Holiday, with Billy Dee Williams as McKay and Richard Pryor as Piano Man.
