In medieval China, the rival Ming and Shaolin factions vie for two swords that are said to promise world domination. Zhang Wuji (Jet Li) travels with his parents to the Wudang Sect to celebrate the 100th birthday of his grandmaster Zhang Sanfeng (Sammo Hung). During the ceremony, martial artists demand that Zhang Wuji's parents reveal the whereabouts of his godfather Xie Xun. The film is loosely based on Jin Yong's novel The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber.
