About
Alanis Obomsawin documents the 1990 standoff in Oka, Quebec, after plans to expand a golf course on Mohawk land meet community resistance.
In July 1990, plans to expand a golf course on Kanien’kéhaka (Mohawk) land in Oka, Quebec, led to a confrontation. The expansion would have affected a sacred burial ground in an area known as The Pines. The Kanien’kéhaka community resisted, and the standoff lasted 78 days. Alanis Obomsawin directed the documentary and is also the narrator. Jack Burning and Herbie Barnes voice Chief Joseph and Chief Augnita, while Ethel Blondin, Robert Bourassa, John Ciaccia, Ellen Gabriel and Elijah Harper appear as themselves. The film documents the events around the 1990 Oka Crisis.
