A musician who leaves the stage becomes a janitor in a Paris apartment building, where he meets a recently retired resident.

Antoine (Gustave Kervern), a musician in his forties, cannot bring himself to go on stage and walks out of the concert. He drifts for a while, then takes a job as a janitor in an old apartment building in eastern Paris. Mathilde (Catherine Deneuve), a recently retired resident, is generous and closely involved in the life of the building and its community. When Mathilde discovers a crack in the wall of her living room, she becomes increasingly anxious about the building. Antoine gradually befriends her.
