About
A documentary about poet and activist Nnimmo Bassey, who works with young writers in Nigeria's polluted Niger Delta and speaks at peaceful protests.
Hope is a Word is a documentary by Maria Galliani Dyrvik about the Niger Delta in Nigeria, where decades of oil extraction have polluted land and water and made farming and fishing almost impossible. The film recalls the 1995 execution of poet-activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, which led to worldwide protests, and follows Nnimmo Bassey, a poet and activist who speaks at peaceful demonstrations. Bassey also works with young writers. In writing sessions, they turn pain, anger and frustration into poems they can share. The pregnant Barinedum, with her personal and sharp verses, and Bassey's rapping son Ukpono stand out. Together they travel through the region with paper and pen, encouraging their community to express itself. Bassey wonders whether it is enough.
