About
Barbara Kopple's documentary records the 1973 Brookside Strike by coal miners and their wives in Harlan County, Kentucky, against the Eastover Coal Company.
Barbara Kopple's 1976 documentary follows the Brookside Strike in Harlan County, southeast Kentucky. In 1973, 180 miners and their wives at the Brookside Mine went on strike against Eastover Coal Company, owned by Duke Power; the UMWA helped organize the walkout. Kopple had planned a film about Miners for Democracy and an effort to remove Tony Boyle from the UMWA presidency, but after the June 1973 strike began she traveled to Harlan County and shifted her focus. With cameraman Hart Perry, she arrived on the picket line, where locals were suspicious of their intentions and rumors spread about a crew from New York.
The cast list includes Norman Yarborough as the Eastover Mining president, Houston Elmore as a UMW organizer and Basil Collins as a mine foreman, alongside people credited as themselves.
