About
In 1949, writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika travel through a divided Germany, from Frankfurt to Weimar, after sixteen years of American exile.
Paweł Pawlikowski's Fatherland centres on the writer and Nobel laureate Thomas Mann, played by Hanns Zischler, and his daughter Erika, played by Sandra Hüller. In 1949, with sixteen years of American exile behind them, they set out together on a journey through Germany. Their route takes them in a black Buick from Frankfurt, then under US control, to Weimar, in the Soviet-occupied zone. The trip brings Thomas Mann back to a homeland that is now divided and fragmented. The film places father and daughter at a turning point in their lives as they travel through the post-war country.
