About
A Minnesota car salesman hires two criminals to kidnap his wife for ransom, while a pregnant police chief investigates.
In 1987, car salesman Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is in financial trouble. He works at a Minneapolis dealership belonging to his wealthy father-in-law, Wade Gustafson (Harve Presnell). Jerry arranges for two criminals, Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare), to kidnap his wife, Jean (Kristin Rudrüd), so that Wade will pay a ransom. They meet in a bar in Fargo, North Dakota, and the men agree to the job for a new car and a share of the money. Carl and Gaear kidnap Jean and take her to a cabin in Moose Lake. Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) is a pregnant police chief who investigates.
