In the Colombian Amazon, shaman Karamakate travels thirty years apart with a sick German ethnographer and an American botanist seeking the rare yakruna plant.
Embrace of the Serpent follows two journeys through the Colombian Amazon, thirty years apart, both led by the indigenous shaman Karamakate. In 1909, the German ethnographer Theodor Koch-Grunberg (Jan Bijvoet), seriously ill, travels by canoe with his field notes and Manduca (Yauenkü Miguee), a westernised local he saved from enslavement on a rubber plantation. They reach Karamakate (Nilbio Torres), who is reluctant to help a westerner and refuses his money, though he treats Theo with a white powder. Theo seeks the rare yakruna plant as a cure, and the three set off along the river. Decades later, an American botanist, Richard Evans Schultes (Brionne Davis), meets the older Karamakate (Antonio Bolívar) while searching for the same plant.
