About
A documentary about Neapolitan filmmaker Elvira Notari, whose silent melodramas and Dora Film productions fell into obscurity.
Elvira Notari: Beyond Silence is a documentary by Valerio Ciriaci about the Neapolitan filmmaker Elvira Notari, seen here in archive footage. Between 1906 and 1930 she directed more than sixty feature films and hundreds of shorts and documentaries, and founded Dora Film in southern Italy. Her melodramas drew on popular Neapolitan music and folklore, with location shooting and tinted images, and told of forbidden romance, class exploitation and populist uprising. Fascist censorship and the arrival of sound left her films in obscurity. The film brings together archivists, historians and other voices, among them Giuliana Bruno, Flavia Amabile and Teresa Saponangelo, to consider Notari's life and the survival of her work.
