In 1989, ill actor Ian Charleson takes over Hamlet in London despite medical advice after Daniel Day-Lewis leaves the National Theatre.
In London in autumn 1989, Scottish actor Ian Charleson, played by Andrew Scott, has seen his film work dry up since early roles in Chariots of Fire and Gandhi. He wants to return to the stage, where he has led productions at the National Theatre. When Daniel Day-Lewis leaves Richard Eyre's Hamlet mid-performance, Charleson spots a chance to take the part. He has AIDS and has developed Kaposi's sarcoma lesions. His doctor, Margaret Johnson (Olivia Colman), at the AIDS ward of the Royal Free Hospital, tells him not to take on Hamlet because of the demands it would place on him. Charleson is set on using the opportunity, and Eyre hires him as Day-Lewis's replacement, knowing about his health.
