A director gathers actresses to discuss a film about women, while in 1970s Rome two sisters take on costumes for an 18th-century production.

In Rome, a director played by Ferzan Özpetek invites a group of actresses to dinner at his home. He tells them he wants to make a film in which women are celebrated, and the group begins to read the screenplay together. The story then moves to Rome in the mid-1970s, to the costume workshop of sisters Alberta and Gabriella Canova, played by Luisa Ranieri and Jasmine Trinca. Costume designer Bianca Vega, played by Vanessa Scalera, commissions the house to make costumes for a historical film set in the 18th century. Time is short and the seamstresses are already busy with a theatre production, but Alberta accepts the job.
