About
In 1941, a German submarine crew leaves La Rochelle for a patrol in the Atlantic, with a war correspondent aboard U-96.
Das Boot is set in the autumn of 1941. In La Rochelle, on the French coast, German soldiers spend an evening in a nightclub before going aboard the submarine U-96 the next morning. The boat leaves harbour for a patrol in the Battle of the Atlantic, where its crew is to sink enemy ships. Lieutenant Werner (Herbert Grönemeyer), a war correspondent, comes along and is shown around the vessel. He sees the contrast between newcomers and experienced men, including the captain, Lieutenant 'Der Alte' (Jürgen Prochnow), who is cynical about the war. The chief engineer is played by Klaus Wennemann.
