About
A Panama-born filmmaker explores her family history with her grandmother while moving, reflecting on Afro-textured hair, memory and Black identity.
Risseth Yangüez Singh, who was born in Panama, explores her family history while helping her grandmother move. In conversations with women from her family and community, and above all with her grandmother, she talks about Afro-textured hair and the history of straightening it. As drawers and cupboards are cleared, photo albums, notebooks and letters come out and bring memories back. Those memories lead to wider reflections on Panama's past and on the suppression of Black identity. The title refers to cuscú, a term for curly hair. The film includes Risseth Yangüez Singh, Francisca García, Giana De Dier and Cristobalina Bósquez.
