About
A New York police officer goes undercover in gay leather and S&M bars to catch a serial killer targeting men there.
In a sweltering New York summer, the discovery of human remains in the Hudson River points to a serial killer whose victims are gay men linked to the city's leather and S&M bars. Police captain Edelson (Paul Sorvino) assigns officer Steve Burns (Al Pacino) to go undercover because Burns fits the victims' profile. Burns takes the name John Forbes and rents an apartment in the Meatpacking District, near the nightlife under scrutiny. He tells his girlfriend Nancy Gates (Karen Allen) about the assignment but not its full target. In his new building he meets Ted Bailey (Don Scardino), a gay playwright, and becomes aware of Ted's troubled relationship with his boyfriend Gregory. The operation draws Burns into a hidden bar scene.
