Two love stories in Chicago, almost a century apart, follow a Deaf Black woman and a hearing Black man, played by the same actors.
Compensation tells two love stories in Chicago that are about a century apart. In the early 1900s, Malindy, a deaf educated seamstress, meets Arthur, a hearing migrant worker from Mississippi who cannot read or write. She teaches him sign language and literacy. In the 1990s, artist Malaika and librarian Nico meet and become romantically involved. Michelle A. Banks and John Earl Jelks play both couples. The earlier story is styled as a silent film, and sign language has a central place. The couples deal with racism and prejudice against deaf people, which put pressure on their relationships.
