About

A famous film director recalls his Sicilian childhood and his friendship with the projectionist of Cinema Paradiso.

In 1988 Rome, film director Salvatore Di Vita comes home late and, after a call from his mother, cannot sleep. He thinks back to his childhood in the small Sicilian town of Giancaldo, a few years after the Second World War. There, eight-year-old Salvatore (Salvatore Cascio), nicknamed Totò, is a bright, cheeky boy whose mother is a war widow. He discovers films and spends all his spare time at the local cinema, Cinema Paradiso. Despite tense beginnings, he becomes friends with the middle-aged projectionist Alfredo (Philippe Noiret), who often lets him watch from the projection booth. The adult Salvatore is played by Jacques Perrin and the teenager by Marco Leonardi; his memories also include Elena Mendola (Agnese Nano as a teenager, Brigitte Fossey as an adult).
