About
1950s New York: a department-store clerk and aspiring photographer meets a wealthy married woman who is going through a difficult divorce.
In 1950s New York, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) works at Frankenberg's department store in Manhattan while aspiring to be a photographer. During the Christmas season she meets Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett), an elegant, wealthy married woman shopping for a doll for her daughter, Rindy. On Therese's suggestion Carol buys a model train set instead, and when she leaves her gloves behind, Therese mails them to her. Therese's boyfriend, Richard Semco (Jake Lacy), wants her to go with him to France and hopes they will marry, but she is uncertain about the relationship. Carol is in a difficult divorce from her husband, Harge Aird (Kyle Chandler). After thanking Therese for returning the gloves, Carol invites her to lunch, beginning a series of meetings.
