About

Derek Jarman's fictionalised portrait of Baroque painter Caravaggio follows his life as a street painter and protégé in 17th-century Rome, where a love triangle develops.

Derek Jarman's 1986 British drama Caravaggio is a fictionalised account of the life of the Baroque painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Nigel Terry plays the painter, with Dexter Fletcher as the young Caravaggio and Spencer Leigh as his companion Jerusaleme. In flashbacks the film follows his youth as a teenage street painter and his time as a protégé of Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte, under whose roof and with whose funding he works. He uses street people, drunks and prostitutes as models for his religious paintings.

Sean Bean appears as the street fighter Ranuccio and Tilda Swinton as Lena; between Caravaggio, Ranuccio and Lena a love triangle develops. The cast also includes Garry Cooper as Davide, Nigel Davenport as Giustiniani and Robbie Coltrane as Scipione Borghese.
