About
Nina Menkes examines how shot design and framing represent women and men, linking camera work to sexual abuse and employment discrimination.
Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power is a 2022 American documentary directed by Nina Menkes. Menkes appears in the film alongside Rosanna Arquette, Penelope Spheeris, Catherine Hardwicke, Julie Dash, Sheila Frazier, Joey Soloway and Eliza Hittman. The documentary examines the politics of how shots are designed in film: how camera work and framing shape the way women and men are represented on screen. It brings together film clips, including clips from Menkes's own fictional films, with interviews with women and nonbinary artists, film theorists and scholars. The film also links this shot design to sexual abuse and assault and to employment discrimination against women. It draws on movie clips from 1896 to 2020.
