About

A New York City Ballet dancer is suited to the White Swan in Swan Lake, while a new rival fits the Black Swan.

Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) is a young dancer with the New York City Ballet. She lives with her overprotective mother Erica (Barbara Hershey), a former ballerina, and her life is centred on dance. The company is opening the season with Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. Artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) is looking for a dancer for the dual roles of the innocent, fragile White Swan, Odette, and the sensual, dark Black Swan, Odile. Nina is a perfect fit for the White Swan, while the new rival Lily (Mila Kunis) is seen as better able to embody the Black Swan. The current prima ballerina, Beth Macintyre (Winona Ryder), is being replaced for the production.
