A young Senegalese woman moves to France to work for a couple, hoping to be a nanny but forced into domestic service.

Black Girl follows Diouana (Mbissine Thérèse Diop), a young Senegalese woman who leaves her village outside Dakar for Antibes, France, to work for a French couple. She is hired by Madame (Anne-Marie Jelinek) to look after the couple's children in Dakar; Monsieur is played by Robert Fontaine. Diouana hopes to continue as a nanny and to find a new cosmopolitan life abroad. In France, however, the couple treats her harshly and forces her to work as a domestic servant. Flashbacks show her life in Senegal, where she searched the city for work before Madame chose her in the square. Diouana gives her employers a traditional mask she bought from a small boy.
