About
A London-based Lebanese journalist and a Syrian cameraman in Aleppo build a relationship through messages and footage amid war and exile.
Birds of War follows Janay Boulos, a London-based Lebanese journalist, and Abd Alkader Habak, a Syrian activist and cameraman; both appear as themselves. They met in 2016, when Boulos was a BBC journalist looking for footage and Habak was a freelance cameraman in Aleppo during the Syrian civil war. After foreign journalists are barred from entering Aleppo, Boulos depends on the material Habak sends her.
Their exchanges begin as brief, practical text messages and gradually become more intimate, with voice messages, personal videos and pet names. Habak also sends images from the front line, including footage from a hospital at the moment it is hit. The documentary is built from thirteen years of their personal archives, spanning revolutions, war and exile.
