In 1984 County Durham, 11-year-old Billy Elliot (Jamie Bell) discovers ballet and secretly takes lessons behind his father's back.
County Durham, England, in 1984, during the miners' strike. Eleven-year-old Billy Elliot (Jamie Bell) lives with his widowed father Jackie (Gary Lewis), his older brother Tony (Jamie Draven), both striking coal miners, and his grandmother (Jean Heywood), who has Alzheimer's. His father sends him to boxing lessons at the gym, but Billy dislikes boxing. He sees a ballet class using the gym and joins out of curiosity without telling his father. When Jackie finds out, he forbids Billy from continuing. Billy secretly keeps taking lessons with teacher Mrs Wilkinson (Julie Walters), who believes he has exceptional talent.
