About
A documentary portrait of German-German singer-songwriter and intellectual Wolf Biermann, whose songs and encounters trace German-German history.
Jens Meurer's documentary Biermann portrays Wolf Biermann, the German-German singer-songwriter and intellectual, who appears as himself. His songs are the starting point for approaching his life; for more than sixty years their poetic force has caused political tremors, small and large. The camera follows Biermann at ninety as he meets young artists, politicians and his family. These encounters are combined with period documents, including previously unpublished archival material, into a collage. The result is a personal kaleidoscope of a life in five different versions of Germany. Biermann's Cologne concert in 1976 is also described as a moment that made German history.
