About
Two young brothers in central Morocco aspire to become accomplished Tbourida riders in Tala Hadid’s documentary about the equestrian ritual and its community.
Tala Hadid’s documentary Bardi is set on the plains of central Morocco, where men and boys gather for Tbourida, a centuries-old equestrian tradition. Teams charge forward in formation and fire gunpowder into the air. The film begins with two young brothers who want to become accomplished riders, then opens onto a portrait of several characters. Across several years it shows the care and brotherhood behind the spectacle. The riders travel through a landscape of saints’ shrines and wheat fields, ancient cities and rural communities. In the ritual, everyday identities are set aside: a farmer becomes a general, a young man a prince, a metal worker a hero. Fiction and reality merge in a choral film sung by different men and boys.
