About
A documentary on the first generation of the US hardcore punk scene, from 1979 to 1986, with interviews and rare live footage.
Paul Rachman's documentary American Hardcore, written by Steven Blush and inspired by Blush's book American Hardcore: A Tribal History, chronicles the first generation of the US hardcore punk scene from 1979 to 1986. Using interviews and rare live footage, it follows the movement through bands such as Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, SSD and the Dead Kennedys. Among the participants are Henry Rollins, Ian MacKaye, Lucky Lehrer, Vic Bondi, Joe Keithley, Moby, Springa and Keith Morris. The film looks at the scene's DIY ethic and straight edge as well as violence at concerts, and links the subculture's anti-authoritarian, sometimes explicitly political character to the repressive politics of the Reagan era.
