About
In the 17th-century Dutch Republic, Michiel de Ruyter leads the fleet against England, France and Germany while political factions threaten civil war.
In the 17th-century Dutch Republic, the young Michiel de Ruyter (Frank Lammers) is at the Battle of Ter Heijde in 1653. There the old admiral Maarten Tromp (Rutger Hauer) tells him to serve only the national interest and not to sail with political winds. De Ruyter later becomes admiral of the Dutch fleet. The Republic is at war with England, France and Germany and is also divided between republicans led by Johan de Witt (Barry Atsma) and Orangists who want William III as stadholder. De Ruyter’s successes at sea make him too popular with the powers that be.
