About
In Ming-dynasty China, a painter is drawn into the flight of a fugitive woman as an agent arrives to arrest her.
A Touch of Zen is set in a remote mountain village in Ming-dynasty China. Gu Sheng-zhai (Shih Chun) is a well-meaning but unambitious scholar and painter, regarded as clumsy and ineffectual. A stranger, Ouyang Nian (Tien Peng), arrives and asks Gu to paint his portrait, though Ouyang has come to arrest a fugitive for the Eastern Depot. The fugitive is Yang Hui-zhen (Hsu Feng), Gu's friend, who is under the protection of General Shi Wen-qiao (Pai Ying). The Chan Buddhist monk Hui-yuan (Roy Chiao) intervenes to protect them. King Hu's wuxia film follows this encounter between the painter and the fugitive.
