About
In 1982, a Rostock waiter inspired by Seume plans an escape from the GDR to Sicily and hopes to return to his wife.
In 1982, Paul Gompitz works as a waiter in Rostock and on an excursion boat in the Greifswalder Bodden. He describes himself as a freedom-loving person, and Johann Gottfried Seume's 1802 travel report Spaziergang nach Syrakus inspires him to explore Italian art and culture and to travel to Sicily. Paul lives in the GDR, and his plan cannot be carried out legally. Applications for an official trip fail, including a visit to his cousin, membership in the League for International Friendship and a study trip. Charly Hübner plays Paul; Lina Beckmann plays his wife Anne. Paul prepares an escape, but he also wants to return to Rostock, to the Baltic Sea and to Anne.
