About

In 1938 Rome, a housewife stays home during Hitler's visit to Mussolini and meets her neighbour, a dismissed radio broadcaster.

On the day Adolf Hitler visits Benito Mussolini in Rome in 1938, Antonietta (Sophia Loren) stays home while her husband Emanuele (John Vernon) and their six children go out to follow the parade. The apartment building empties. When the family's myna escapes and lands at a neighbour's window, Antonietta asks Gabriele (Marcello Mastroianni) to let her in so she can reach the bird. Gabriele is a radio broadcaster who has lost his job and is due to be sent to Sardinia over his homosexuality and suspected anti-fascist stance. The two neighbours meet.
