About
Tom Fontenille documents his father Patrice, who after his wife’s death begins living as a woman, Lilou, and the family’s four-year transition.
A Secret Heart is a French documentary directed by Tom Fontenille. It follows the filmmaker’s relationship with his father, Patrice, after the death of Patrice’s wife, Yolande. Patrice, 64, decides that he no longer wants to hide and will live as a woman, Lilou. Contact between Patrice and his children, Tom and Manon, had stalled after the loss of their mother, and the film follows the family over four years as Lilou’s transition sets things in motion. Fontenille films his own family, capturing Lilou’s everyday life and the friction that arises within the family during the process.
