About
A famous film director with writer's block retreats to a spa, where his producer, wife, mistress and crew press him to start his new film.
Famous Italian film director Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni) is preparing a new science fiction film with autobiographical elements but has lost his inspiration. On his doctors' advice he retreats to a luxurious spa to rest. There he is soon surrounded by the people he wanted to escape: his producer, his staff, actors, his wife Luisa (Anouk Aimée) and his mistress Carla (Sandra Milo), who all urge him to get on with the film. The production moves to his hotel, while Guido withdraws into daydreams, memories of his childhood and fantasies about the women in his life. He keeps postponing the start of shooting.
