Only the experienced spearman Yeung Ng Long (fifth son) and his brother Yeung Luk Long (sixth son) escape; the others are killed or captured.
The sixth son returns home traumatized.
The fifth son flees to a Buddhist monastery, where he is admitted only if he renounces all violence; he does, but still trains with sticks.
He develops the Eight Diagram stick-fighting technique, which later helps him.
What happened during production?
Before filming was complete, actor Alexander Fu Sheng, who played the sixth son, died in a car accident.
Director Liu Chia-liang rewrote the story.
The fifth son became the hero instead of the sixth son.
