What to expect
Matti Gralka explains how microbes too small to see carry out about half of Earth’s photosynthesis in the ocean and help regulate the climate.
- A glass of seawater holds many microbes
- Ocean microbes equal land forests in photosynthesis
- Some carbon sinks as marine snow
- AIMMS brings science into conversation

What is the lecture about?
Matti Gralka presents The Ocean’s Rainforest: How Marine Microbes Shape Our Climate.
A glass of seawater holds as many microbes as there are people on Earth.
Ocean microbes do as much photosynthesis as all land forests, despite weighing under 1% of the world’s plants.
Some carbon returns as CO₂; some sinks as “marine snow” and can stay deep for centuries.
Bacteria live with algae as partners or killers, and viruses end algal blooms.
