In Dortmund the tree on Hansaplatz is said to be the biggest in the world, in Essen, Bochum, Duisburg and Gelsenkirchen the town-centre markets open, and theatres and concert halls stage Christmas fairy tales, The Nutcracker and the Christmas Oratorio.
